I know, I know, the real true way to lose some weight and feel good about yourself is to eat in a calorie deficit. I have been successful using this method combined with weight-lifting but…sometimes you just gotta spice things up. I am a very competitive person. I like setting a challenge for myself and it stops the monotony of just “eat healthy”…”go to the gym”.
After some browsing on Amazon, I came across a Nutrisystem 5-Day Weight Loss Kit. It was under $50 and came with 5 breakfasts, 5 lunches, and 5 dinners. That seemed like a pretty good deal…and I didn’t have to cook. I thought, ehh what the heck.
When the box came after a few days, I was concerned about how small it was. Essentially every meal that I was going to consume that week fit in that box?! What did I get myself into?
I had looked into Nutrisystem programs before and after taking a look at the instruction booklet, I learned that there are different add-in’s that you supplement the meals with.
Nutrisystem refers to them as:
- Powerfuel- which is a small protein add-on to help you feel full, like a hard-boiled egg.
- Smartcarb- which is what it sounds like. A carb to help you continue to have energy between meals- like an apple or banana.
- Vegetables- this one is self explanatory. I am a believer in having as many vegetables as you desire, but they did have measurements for options in the guide.

Other than buying some hard-boiled eggs (no, I cannot make my own. I have tried every way and fail lol), greek yogurt, and veggies, meal prep this week was super simple. Nutrisystem is pretty easy to follow with their color-coded system: yellow for breakfast, blue for lunch, and red for dinner.
Testimonial:
I honestly had expected to feel super hungry all week because even though I eat healthy…I love large portions. The breakfast choices were a two different oat bars, smoothie, oatmeal, and cereal. Overall combining these with a Powerfuel (for me, a hard-boiled egg) kept me full until the next scheduled snack.
The only critique I had about breakfast was that the cereal was about 15 pieces of granola. Pouring that into a bowl with milk felt super silly. It all almost fit on my spoon.
For lunch, they suggest you eat their prepackaged meal and add 1-2 servings of a vegetable. This came out to be a decent amount of food. The options for lunch were chicken noodle soup, double chocolate caramel bar, red beans and quinoa and rice, spicy kung pao noodles, and yellow rice and black beans. Again, these were all actually really good. My critique for lunch was that the double chocolate caramel bar was very weird to pair with veggies. The others, I could make a plate that looked like a satisfying meal…the chocolate bar seemed more like a snack to me.
The dinner’s that were included were chicken pasta parmesan, cheesy chicken casserole, hearty beef strew, mac & cheese with turkey sausage, and santa fe style chicken. Honestly, I have no complaints about any of these meals. I thought they were filling, a good size, and very convenient to bring with you. A few times a week I have dinner at my mom’s house with my nephews and it was nice to have my meal microwaved on a regular plate and just add the vegetables that she had.

Results and Final Thoughts:
On Monday morning before starting Nutrisystem, I weighed in at 179 lbs. I usually sit at right around 165-170 lbs, so I was excited to potentially lose those extra pounds. Because I live in Michigan, we have had very strict pandemic laws and this included the gym, so naturally I put on a little weight. On Saturday morning, I weighed in at 177 lbs. Despite the small box and my apprehension with the size of the meals, I was happy to lose 2 lbs. It seemed like a healthy amount and I genuinely only felt really hungry one or two times.
In addition to Nutrisystem, I drank about a gallon of water a day and made sure I hit 10,000 steps. The program does suggest doing some sort of exercise and staying hydrated.
I also continued to weightlift each morning. I had read some blogs beforehand where people had felt light-headed and did not recommend exercise while trying the diet program. However, I think sticking with what your body is used to doing shouldn’t pose a problem.
Overall I was pleased with the power of portion control that it gave me. Each day my total calories was between 1200-1500 calories. I felt satisfied and I may do it again after a holiday or when I need a little pick me up!
Let me know if you have tried any Nutrisystem products and what your experience was!
