Charcuterie boards.

They are one of the best appetizers. They allow for individuality and can be as simple or as complicated as you want them to be. I personally love them because they are adult lunchables lol. I do occasionally steal my nephews lunchables for the nostalgia (shhhh) but making a charcuterie board is much more acceptable.

I am known in my family/friend circle for my charcuterie boards. I could sit there for hours shifting the meat and cheeses. It is like an art form. Another thing that I love is themes. Birthday parties…what is the theme? Regular parties…what is the theme? I think it adds excitement for me. I love planning.

For the past several years I have made a charcuterie board for Christmas Eve. I would intricately add rosemary and cranberries and pick out the prettiest meat and cheese I could find. I will need to document it next time! However, with it being spring/summer, I thought let’s make a patriotic themed charcuterie board! And it turned out great!

I planned a little bit before I went to the grocery store by writing down items that I knew were red or blue. But, most things that I got for this board was from me wandering the aisles looking for red, white, and blue inspiration. Hopefully this blog post takes that time consuming aspect out of it for you!

Because this charcuterie board is patriotic, I think it’s best served in the warmer weather, like Memorial Day, Fourth of July, or Labor Day. I included a lot of fruit for that reason. A nice barbeque in the backyard is always complimented with some fresh fruit to pick at.

Red was no problem. It is amazing how many fruits and veggies are red. I used cherry tomatoes, strawberries, raspberries, watermelon, radishes, cherries, and red bell peppers.

It was also nice that the meats I wanted to use like salami and pepperoni are red as well.

I wanted to organize the charcuterie board with red all together, white all together, and blue all together. White was a little harder but between the cheeses, it worked out well. I used tiny mozzarella balls, yogurt covered pretzels, cubed horseradish cheese, Barely Buzzed Cheddar, and  North Sea Cheese. I often try and follow the “charcuterie rules” on the numbers of cheese and types that you should organize your board with…but I really wanted to go for looks on this one, so I kind of threw that out the window.

For the blue section, I used blueberries, blackberries, and blue corn tortilla chips. There are a lot less blue foods I found, so I kept the blue at the bottom of my charcuterie board where it is a bit thinner in size.

Starting to build the charcuterie board is the hardest part. I tend to spend a lot of time strategizing, when in reality I work best throwing the food on the board and seeing what works best by trial and error. I really like a full charcuterie board, so I started with piling the red fruit on the top of the board.

I worked my way down with the white cheeses. The two cheeses worked as a good divider to keep the red and blue separate.

Have fun with organizing the board! There is no wrong way to do it. I think more is better. Adding as much as possible makes for a prettier, more vibrant charcuterie board.

A final touch that I think really sets this charcuterie board apart is using a cookie cutter and some slices of cheese to make patriotic stars. I made a few and laid them over the red and blue fruit.

I had ordered cookie cutters from Amazon that were a little toooo small (peep them at the bottom of the board on the tortilla chips). I was determined to use them lol. It was a fail.

Overall, I think that if you make this board for a summer party, it will definitely impress!
