At the start of quarantine, I, like millions of other people had a lot more time to myself. While half the internet was being productive…cleaning, learning a new hobby…I was a part of the other half that downloaded TikTok for the first time.

Being 32 years old, my For You Page (or FYP for us hip TikTok people say) has been consumed by a lot of recipes. Some look so yummy and interesting that I thought I would start trying them.

This time I decided to try the Viral TikTok where the user “futurelettuce” makes shredded chicken from only flour and water. This concept was first seen as far back as 6th century China and has been a big meat substitute since the 1960s. However, I was amazed at the video and wondered what it tasted like. It couldn’t be good…right?

According to TikTok, the only things you need to make this shredded chicken is flour, water, and some spices. I saw various ratios for flour versus water, but ultimately I used 4 cups of flour and 1.5 cups of water. You start by combining in a large bowl and kneading together until it is a dough consistency.

After the dough is kneaded, you fill the bowl with cold water, cover, and let sit for at least 1 hour.

Next, you uncover and begin to knead the dough again. The moment the water turns white like milk, you need to drain the water, fill it back up and repeat. You repeat this procedure until you are kneading the dough and the water just becomes cloudy instead of instantly white.

You guys, when I tell you that I did this over 20 times…I am not exaggerating. My water never stopped getting white. A lot of people I saw said 8 times is about what it is needed. I did over double!!

At this point…I decided I just had to go to the next step. I think I would still be standing there today if I kept going until my water didn’t turn white.

I drained the water and added spices. I chose tumeric, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. I separated the dough into 2 sections and pulled them into long strings, twisted, and made them into knots.

Next, I poured oil into a pan and let each side simmer for 5 minutes. This made it golden brown and actually made me excited! Maybe my white water disaster wouldn’t ruin the whole thing.

I then filled the pan about halfway up the “knot patties” with broth, turned the stovetop down, and covered for 1 hour. I flipped them over at the 30 minute mark.

Afterwards, they looked good I thought! Golden brown and maybe resembled chicken? But…once I shredded them and gave them a taste…I was not a fan. Actually, I am not sure I can even it it. At all.

I fully believe this was my wrongdoing…I mean people have been eating this for centuries, right? I mean, I guess people have also been eating pig intestines for centuries too, so…

Overall, I am happy I tried this. It was a fun activity to try on a Saturday. However, I wish it went better for me. If you do try this viral Tiktok, let me know how it goes! Did you fail like me? Or is it something you would enjoyed and would have again?
